How does massage increase relaxation?
There are two parts to our nervous system: the sympathetic nervous system, which is associated with the "fight or flight" response, and the parasympathetic nervous system, which is associated with the "rest and digest" response. Once we sense a stressful situation, be it avoiding a car accident or spilling coffee first thing in the morning, the body kicks into fight or flight response. If we remain in this state, our bodies are unable to rest and digest on both physical and metaphysical levels.
Massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and the "rest and digest" instinct, thereby allowing the body to relax.
How does massage contribute to a better pregnancy and birth experience?
According to a study conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, women receiving 20 minute sessions of back massage twice a week for five weeks experienced reduced anxiety, improved mood, better sleep and less back pain. The study also found that the women had decreased levels of stress hormones and fewer complications during labor. Additionally, their infants had less postnatal complications (e.g., less prematurity).
Can massage therapy help my premenstrual symptoms?
Massage therapy helps lymph flow and hormone balance. A Touch Research Institute study showed that massage sessions positively influenced anxiety, depressed mood and pain. In addition, the massage therapy group reported a reduction in menstrual discomforts including pain and water retention. These data suggest that massage therapy is helpful for premenstrual syndrome and its symptoms.
Testimonials
I can't express how fortunate I feel to have found Jenny Lorant. I worked with Jenny throughout most of my first pregnancy, with many unfamiliar aches and pains. Jenny was so knowledgeable, and balanced intense massage work with a sense of gentleness that left me in the deepest state of relaxation. Looking forward to seeing Jenny and getting to see her throughout my pregnancy added so much to the process of becoming a first time mom. Jenny is a dream!

I had a lot of muscle pain during my pregnancy. I would explain the pain to her and she would address it every time. I really felt like she listened. She also listened with her hands and she would find areas that needed work that I didn't even tell her about. She has such a nice energy that massages with her really reduced my stress level. It was also great knowing she was a mother and had been pregnant before.

I feel so fortunate to have experienced the "magic hands" of Jenny Lorant! Jenny has a very positive presence and energy, and transmits her deep sense of caring through her massages. She is very skilled, conscientious and holistic in her approach: she seems to look at the body as a whole, and then determines the appropriate treatment for a specific problem. I came to her with an ailment, sleeplessness, and she was able to specifically target this problem though her treatment. After her massage, I slept the night through for the first time in months! I wholeheartedly recommend Jenny as a caring, sensitive, skilled massage therapist.
